More Brit Lit Talk

Okay, so I'm doing fine with the whole writing my paper's just that I just have waaaay too much to say! UGH! I need to get done, but I want to go far far into depths of examining Lady Macbeth's motives...which takes time. MUST CONTROL URGE TO DIG DEEP. Sad. I should just save this for my thesis paper at the end of the semester...of course...I want to go into the details of Eve and Satan's similarity...BAH. I just have too many theories on things.

Oh Dear...

So, we read Macbeth by Shakespeare in Brit-Lit a few weeks ago, we were supposed to write a short response (teacher had given us prompts to use) and turn it in on the 28th of January...well, I am a procrastinator, and I work better under pressure, so I hadn't even thought about starting until a couple days before it was due...and then I got seriously sick, and couldn't work on it. So, thankfully, my teacher is very understanding about working better under pressure (she says she does the same thing), and since I had got sick, she gave me an extra week and a half. I'm supposed to send it in today. I haven't started. I AM SO STUPID. Thank goodness I work good under pressure, but seriously...I wish I had at least a little more time! Hopefully I can concentrate and get it done, and it will be amazing ;). And now off I go to work on my Macbeth assignment! I'm glad I like Shakespeare :P.

Paradise Lost Assignment for Brit-Lit

This assignment was fairly interesting and short, so I thought I'd post it on here.

Paradise Lost was written by John Milton, and was originally published in 1667 in ten separate books. Our assignment was to take a small portion of the text (any part from books 1, 3, 5, or 9) and translate it into modern English, and then write a little about it, ( i.e. analysis time!). This was also a surprise assignment, and mostly for fun, so Grace (my teacher) let us cash in our artistic licence, and have fun withe the translation process. I (of course) decided to make mine rhyme, and below are the results. Listed first is the original version of text, and then below that is my version of the same text, and what I had to say about it. Let it be noted I don't *actually* think that the fruit had a mind of it's own, I just was having some fun with it. Hopefully it's not horribly boring ;).

Original (Book 9 lines 780-801)

So saying, her rash hand in evil hour
Forth reaching to the fruit, she pluck’d, she ate;
Earth felt the wound, and Nature from her seat,
Sighing through all her works, gave signs of woe
That all was lost. Back to the thickets slunk
The guilty serpent, and well might; for Eve,
Intent now wholly on her taste, naught else
Regarded, such delight till then, as seem’d
In fruit she never tasted, whether true
Or fancied so, through expectation high
Of knowledge, nor was Godhead from her thought
Greedily she ingorg’d without restraint
And knew, not eating death. Satiate at length
And highten’d as with wine, jocund and boon,
Thus to herself pleasingly began.

Bekah’s Version (Book 9 lines 780-801)

Persuaded, her hand stretched forward, in that dark hour,
Reaching for that deadly fruit, biting, unleashing evil power
This earth felt the wound, as did Nature from her place,
And sighing, Nature through her works, showed her woe,
Knowing that all was lost. Back to the bushes to hide his face
That guilty serpent slid, and so he should, no more the light to know.
And Eve, consumed with the flavor of the fruit in her hand,
Was oblivious to all else, the taste being so grand
She thought she’d never tasted so delicious a fruit before,
This may be true, or just Eve’s imagination due to high expectation.
In her thoughts God was not absent, but she chose to ignore,
As she greedily gorged herself without hint of hesitation,
Not knowing she was eating death itself. Eventually satisfied,
Drunk with the fruit’s juices, and happily gratified,
Eve with herself began to confide.

The fruit in this piece of extracted poetry, holds an extraordinary amount of power. The fruit holds the power of good and evil, one bite from it brought chaos to an otherwise perfect world.

“...biting, unleashing evil power,
This earth felt the wound, as did Nature from her place,
And sighing, Nature through her works, showed her woe,” Lines 781-783
Though it would seem Eve was consuming the fruit while she was eating it, if the reader looks more closely, they will realize that rather, the fruit was consuming her. Eve even says herself earlier in this epic that this fruit would feed both her “body and mind”, a clear sign that this fruit’s nature was already penetrating into Eve. Once Eve had began, she couldn't stop eating this enchanting fruit, the fruit was the only thing Eve could focus on, she was obsessed with it. Eve believed she had never tasted anything as wonderful as this fruit, due to the fact that this fruit’s evil nature had already been making it’s way into Eve’s consciousness, and causing her anticipate the taste being more marvelous than any before.
“And Eve, consumed with the flavor of the fruit in her hand,
Was oblivious to all else, the taste being so grand
She thought she’d never tasted so delicious a fruit before,
This may be true, or just Eve’s imagination due to high expectation.” Lines 786-789
As said above, she was oblivious to everything but that which was in her hand at that moment, another sign of the fruit’s power over Eve. Eve was so obsessed with this fruit, that she was immune to the prods of her conscience as she filled herself hastily with the fruit of death, that had consumed her thoughts so wholly.
“In her thoughts God was not absent, but she chose to ignore,
As she greedily gorged herself without hint of hesitation,
Not knowing she was eating death itself...” Lines 790-792
The unholy might of this fruit is hard to explore in such a short passage, but it is clear that this fruit holds an extraordinary amount of power. The fruit had begun to consume Eve before she had even eaten any, causing her to be unmindful of the consequences of her actions might bring. Eve’s conscience was ignored because of the potency of the fruit, and after she had taken the bite that brought on the downfall of humankind, the fruit fully consumed her.

Psalm 107

1 O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth forever.
2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;
3 And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south. 4 They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in.
5 Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.
6 Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.
7 And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.
8 O that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
9 For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.
10 Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron;
11 Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High:
12 Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help.
13 Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.
14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.
15 O that man would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
16 For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder.
17 Fools, because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities , are afflicted.
18 Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death.
19 Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.
20 He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.
21 O that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
22 And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.
23 They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in the great waters;
24 These see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.
25 For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.
26 They mount up to the heaven, and they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.
27 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit's end.
28 Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.
29 He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.
30 Then they are glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.
31 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
32 Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.
33 He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground;
34 A fruitful land unto the barrenness, for the wickedness for them that dwell therein.
35 He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into watersprings.
36 And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation;
37 And sow the fields, and plant the vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase.
38 He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and suffereth not their cattle to decrease.
39 Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow.
40 He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness where there is no way.
41 Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock.
42 The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.
43 Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the loving kindness of the Lord.

Debate 2/9/13

Debate was....tiring. It was also fun though :). What sucks is I got cheated out of a award or two! So, there are four debate rounds in each day, but for some reason, mine and Caleb's last round didn't get counted in the scores! I think it was because out of everyone in the fourth round, we got done last. That was technically the judge's fault though, because he was a good 10-20 minutes late! So, he didn't get his ballot in until late, and the people calculating our scores didn't catch it, so, our scores for the last round weren't counted, and me and Caleb both didn't get awards that we were supposed to. I would've got seventh speaker, and Caleb would've got 8th or 9th. The only redeemable thing about it is, I got higher speaker points then Caleb, and I can hold it over him for a long time ;-). We only won 2 out of the 4 rounds, but we *should* have won 3. Everyone else who watched our 2nd debate thought we should've won. Our first debate round was more debatable on who won, but the only reason that the Negative team won is because they had a Disadvantage...but they didn't have ANY evidence for their disadvantage  and we had LOTS of evidence for our advantages and for our entire case. Oh well, we can just hope and pray that mistakes like these don't happen at the Tournament in April!

Below is a picture of all the debaters (Not including Jonathan because he decided to go and do something else, and no one noticed he was missing until AFTER the pictures were all done :P). It's not very high quality,  but it's one of the best ones my little sister took :P.

Oh Look! I Have a Blog....

I did something stupid. I stayed up 'til 1:00 (almost 2:00) even though I KNEW I needed to be up by 7:00 this morning....FAIL ON MY PART. Spanish started up again this morning (I know, loooonnnnnnngggg break, it was awesome!) and I officially pledge NOT to stay up past midnight on Tuesday nights...BLEH. I like Spanish, but I *don't* like getting up at the crack of dawn to do it :-P.

I haven't posted in know, forever. I've started quite a few different posts, but then I find myself getting bored with what I'm writing, or thinking it'd be a little too creepy to have everyone able to look into the depths of my soul. So those drafts are sitting, waiting for me to go back and read them again and laugh at myself.

I'm really very excited for today too though; ELT! ELT is the most amazing homeschool co-op EVAH! Awesome people, awesome fun classes. I baked a cake and made icing last night, to bring to my cake decorating class today! It's gonna be epicly fun :-D. I's cake ;-). I put the cake and icing in the van last night so that I wouldn't forget it today...'cause I totally would forget it xD. So, there's awesome cake, PLUS I get to see my amazing friends :-D. Or, some of my amazing would be completely awesome to have *all* my friends come to the same co-op! Or maybe highly stressful because I'd feel the need to interact with each one of them. Sheesh, way to put a downer on that Bek! It is strange when I talk to myself in third person. It feels funny. Annnnyyyywwwwwaaaaayyyyysssss.

SO much has happened since the last time I posted, it would take a long time to tell everything about it....I'll try to catch the highlights though....

December: My B-day, My Sisters B-day, Christmas Celebrations, My Recital, My Concert.
Let me elaborate more on Christmas; I got some AMAZING converse, knee high, white,  I get to decorate them! SO STINKING COOL! Mercy, I'm pretty sure they're even more cool then your green ones with flowers! I also got a super duper cute umbrella. It's a flower, one big, giant flower! It's pink, which makes it that much cooler of course. I LOVE it! So amazing :-D. I also got some 2 and 1/2 inch heeled boots from Gillian!!! (Gillian is my sister-in-law). They're black, and I've been wanting some SO badly for a while now! Yayayayayayayayayayayayay!! And then of course I got a bunch of other little do-dads that would take impossibly long to explain.

January: EPIC MIDNIGHT CELEBRATION TO START OFF THE NEW YEAR!!!! Nearly lost my dog forever, Started up school again, Auditioned, got a call back, and eventually joined S.K.I.T. Theatre!  (Salem Keizer Insperational Teens). ELT started again, Made some new friends, My Choir Instructor is no longer able to teach, so Charity is taking over, Debate Started...I threw up at the first event, and my poor partner had to solo for the last round, 2nd event for the year is this Saturday!
I would talk more about S.K.I.T. but I have SO much to say, that I think I should just do a separate post ;-).

So, there you have it folks, a (very) quick version of my last 2 months.
